Prepared by Home Triage Australia. Updated 6 November 2026. General guidance, not a diagnosis. Not independently reviewed by a qualified tradesperson. How these guides are prepared.
What to do now
Protect food and food-contact surfaces. Keep children and pets away from bait or pesticide treatment. Do not mix products or spray into electrical appliances.
What could explain it?
- Indoor breeding infestation
- Food and water sources
- Entry from outside or adjoining premises
- Harbourage in cracks or appliance areas
These are possibilities to discuss with the professional, not a confirmed cause.
Describe the pattern
Record size, rooms, daytime or night-time sightings and whether young insects are present. A photo is useful for identification. Avoid moving infested appliances to another room, and tell the technician about shared walls or nearby food premises.
Make the treatment easier to sustain
Store food securely, remove accessible crumbs and keep rubbish contained. Report plumbing leaks and ask how to clean around professionally placed baits without interfering with the treatment. Recurrence can mean the source or access remains.
Licensing and household preparation
Ask for the operator’s relevant licence, product information, preparation steps and re-entry instructions. Mention pets, aquariums and anyone who needs extra precautions before treatment is selected. Follow local public-health guidance and the product label.
What the professional may do next
- Identify the species and activity
- Reduce accessible food and moisture
- Apply suitable targeted control
- Review activity and prevention
Australian cost guidance
Prices checked 25 October 2026. All figures are AUD. These are attributed published examples, not Home Triage quotes or independently verified market averages. Region, access, scope and GST treatment matter. No supplier is endorsed.
Sydney and Perth provider example
Xpress Pest Control lists $180–$350 for cockroach control. Confirm whether the quote covers the identified species, repeat visits and GST; a general pest spray may have a different scope.

What to compare
Ask whether the program includes inspection, treatment of all affected rooms and a follow-up assessment. Heavy or building-wide infestations need a separate scope rather than a small-home price.
Before booking
- Check the pest technician’s current pesticide authorisation and ask how treatment will be chosen for the identified species.
- Ask what inspection, parts, labour, GST and follow-up visits are included.
- Get exclusions and approval of extra work in writing.
