Plumbing & water

Low water pressure

Check your water supplier’s service notices if the change affects the whole property. A licensed plumber can assess a fixture, valve, supply pipe or leak when the issue is within the property.

What to do now

Keep safety first

Do not adjust pressure regulators, pumps or supply infrastructure yourself. A sudden loss of flow with visible flooding needs prompt help. If water is near electricity, keep clear.

What could explain it?

  • Water-network interruption or pressure issue
  • Fixture restriction
  • Partly closed or faulty valve
  • Pipe restriction or leak

These are possibilities to discuss with the professional, not a confirmed cause.

One outlet or the whole home?

Record whether one shower, all cold taps, only hot water or every outlet is affected. Note whether it began suddenly or gradually, and any recent plumbing work. Flow that feels weak does not by itself measure the actual water pressure.

Use the right first contact

If neighbours are affected too, or your supplier lists an outage, start with the supplier. Sydney Water provides service-status and fault-reporting routes; use your own supplier elsewhere. If no network issue is identified, describe the affected outlets to a plumber.

Avoid an unnecessary upgrade

Ask for the measured pressure and flow, where testing was performed and the diagnosed cause before accepting a pump, pipe replacement or regulator change. A replacement part should address the confirmed fault, not just the symptom.

What the professional may do next

  1. Note hot versus cold and affected outlets
  2. Check supplier notices for your area
  3. Arrange testing of the property supply if needed
  4. Repair the identified restriction or fault

What affects your quote

There is no useful single price for a symptom that could involve the water network, one outlet, a valve or a pipe. Start with the supplier’s service information for a whole-property or area problem, then agree any property-level investigation before authorising repairs.

1. Attendance and diagnosis

Ask what the call-out covers, whether pressure and flow testing are included, the time allowance, GST and any charge if no property fault is found. Agree approval before additional investigation or opening-up work.

2. Repair of the identified fault

Request a separate description and price for the diagnosed component or pipe work. Ask what evidence supports a regulator, pump or pipe replacement and how the result will be checked.

3. Access and making good

Confirm whether excavation, access panels, wall or paving repairs, disposal and repeat visits are included. Leak detection is a separate investigation when indicated; a leak-detection price is not a low-water-pressure repair estimate.

Useful comparison: an attendance-and-testing quote and a pipe-replacement quote cover different work. Compare scope before totals. This page does not publish a verified national repair-price range.

Before booking

  • Check the plumber’s current licence for your state and the scope of supply testing or repairs being proposed.
  • Ask what inspection, parts, labour, GST and follow-up visits are included.
  • Get exclusions and approval of extra work in writing.

Find the relevant official licence or authority →

Tenants should report the problem promptly. Responsibility depends on the cause, agreement, common property and local rules; do not assume the person who notices it must pay.
